About Me

I’ve spent more of my life thinking about binoculars than most people think is reasonable. That’s fine. I started out working the optics counter at a major outdoor gear retailer. The kind of place where people walk in holding a box they grabbed off a shelf, already half-convinced they made the right call. Most of the time, they hadn’t. Not because they were careless, but because nobody had explained what any of it meant before they bought.

I answered those questions for years. What does 8×42 mean. Why is this one $80 and that one $800. Will this work for birding. Is image stabilization actually worth it. After a while, I started writing the answers down. Not for customers. Just because I kept wishing there was a single place that explained this stuff without talking down to people or burying everything in optical jargon. This site is that place.

What This Site Is

Binospecs.com covers one thing: understanding binoculars. Not reviews. Not deals. Not monthly rankings. Just the specs: what they actually mean, how they affect what you see, and how to match them to what you’re really trying to do.

If you’ve ever picked up a pair of binoculars and felt like you needed an engineering degree to make sense of the box, this site is for you. Every article here starts from the same assumption: you’re smart, you just haven’t been given the right explanation yet. That’s the only thing I’m trying to fix.

Got a question about a spec you don’t understand, spotted something wrong, or just want to tell me I got something backwards? I read every email.
